ski hike, & anyting else

  1. The news of Howie's death truly saddened me. I first met him out on Moose Meadows several years ago as he pulled his home-made groomer behind his snowmachine. The two of us visited and, from that point on, we would always stop for a chat whenever we met. Usually these encounters were when I ran into Howie skate-skiing on the meadows, but sometimes I would meet him mountain-biking at Crevasse Moraine or running on the Kepler-Bradley trails. Regardless of the place or time, Howie always took the time to converse. From these chance encounters and, at times, extended conversations I learned much about Howie. I found out that he was a dedicated and fiercely loyal husband and father. I learned that he had a positive outlook towards life and that he loved the outdoors and all the wonderful adventures that Alaska offered. From our talks I discovered that Howie was committed to protecting the environment, that he had strong political convictions, and that he believed in contributing unselfishly to one's community.

Howie, I will miss our talks. Thank you for being a mentor and a role model during our brief friendship. My thoughts and prayers are with your wife and daughter.
